As summer winds to a close, we are once again presented with the opportunity to recall the sacrifices made by the hundreds of women who worked for years to earn women the right to vote. On August 26, Women’s Equality Day, I urge you to take some time to remember that just 100 years ago, equality was only a dream for American women. And while many challenges remain, we must also celebrate our progress!
The Detroit and Downriver chapters of the National Organization for Women recently merged and will host their annual tribute to outstanding feminists on Women’s Equality Day. Learn how you can attend this wonderful event – and find out about many other activities, including a fund-raising tribute to Michael Jackson, in NETWORK. Other non-profit news and events, including a seminar for LGBT survivors of abuse, are listed in SHARING.
Working toward a better future has been on my mind since I attended a lunch meeting last month with Marie Wilson, President of The White House Project. Read what’s on her mind – it’s our FEATURED story – and watch for more news about this exciting and inspiring organization in the coming months.
Remember Niki Sherman, founder of the Strategic Small Business Initiative? She’s taking her organization – which offers assistance and support for small businesses – to the next level. SSBI is going national, and Niki has a special invitation for Michigan Women’s Forum readers, through the month of August. Read more in BIZ. In other business news, Inforum has elected a group of new leaders in metro Detroit and west Michigan.
As someone who decided to “go gray,” I am especially fond of Cindy LaFerle’s new SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE column, which offers some wonderful insights about looking “old”. Cindy’s thoughtful writing is also featured every Thursday in The Oakland Press. Be sure to check into her home office as well, to keep up with her work.
As always, feel free to share Michigan Women’s Forum – and thanks for your continued support. We’ll be back again in a few weeks with a little bit of a different look and a lot more interesting reading.
Enjoy!
